When I started to feel dizzy and sick a few years ago, I headed straight to the E.R. My family has a history of heart attacks and I didn’t want to take any chances. Since I have insurance, I didn’t think the visit would be unaffordable for me.
I was shocked when I found out the hospital had billed me for $30,000. I called my insurance company, but they said they wouldn’t pay for it because the bill had been coded wrong.
Several phone calls later, the insurance company finally said they would pay $5,000 of the bill – their final offer. I knew that wouldn’t be enough, so I kept trying. Finally, the hospital said they would cut the bill in half if I could pay the rest in a lump sum. I had to scrape together money from family, friends and loans to pay the bill because I didn’t want it to go to collections.
It was hard for me to come up with thousands of dollars to pay this debt, but I didn’t know what else to do. I thought I had good insurance, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
