ALAMEDA

For years, my husband ran a small paint contracting business. Then he had a heart attack. While he was recovering from his heart attack, he missed one payment on his health insurance and was dropped from the policy. Because of his recent heart attack, he had a hard time finding insurance.

He finally found a high-risk plan through Blue Cross, but it had a $50,000 yearly cap. Things were fine until he got diagnosed with Leukemia. We were told by the hospital to get on MediCal because his policy wouldn’t cover his treatments.

My husband applied for MediCal, but was denied because of excess property. The ‘property’ was a 25-year-old car that was in our garage. We appealed, but in the meantime, the bills kept piling up.

I was afraid that if I didn’t pay at least part of them, my husband wouldn’t get care anymore. So I bundled up the stacks of bills and my mom helped me sort through them. We owed $800,000 in hospital bills. I paid little amounts here and there to each of them, hoping it was enough to keep them at bay.

Finally, Medi-Cal came through, but by then my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. He came home, to be cared for by hospice. I took over his business and looked after my 8-year-old stepson.

My husband passed away four months later.

My husband’s first policy was canceled for a small mistake, his second policy didn’t cover his treatments; and he couldn’t cut through the bureaucracy on his third policy fast enough. Three strikes – I guess that’s all you get.

Avonnet,
Yours is one of the saddest stories that I have read. You would think that there would have been some human compassion shown. I am so sorry that you lost your husband and you are stuck with high bills. I also lost my Cobra insurance for paying 3 days late. There is no forgiveness. I bet the insurance companies paid some of their bills three days late, but what do they have to lose?
I hope your life gets better and by working together we can get better health care for everyone.
