A landmark bill intended to overhaul California's $186 billion health care system won approval Wednesday by a key state Senate committee, setting up a showdown in the coming weeks.

The measure, sponsored by the leaders of the Legislature's Democratic majority, would extend coverage to 3.4 million working Californians who lack health insurance by requiring employers and workers to share the costs.

The bill, AB8, was approved by the state Senate's Health Committee after a two-hour debate that attracted about 50 witnesses. The bill needs approval from one additional committee before it can be considered by the full Senate -- action that is expected to take place in the coming weeks.

It would also need approval from the state Assembly.

Although the measure is jointly authored by Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, and Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles -- it is not likely to be put before the governor in its current form.
