It's Our Healthcare

Attacking the Victim

By Jan from Anaheim

(Editor's Note: This is an open letter response to John Seiler, former Orange County Register columnist that commented on a recent print ad placed by the It's OUR Healthcare campaign that featured Jan's healthcare story.)

John,

I’m sure you and I have different opinions about any number of things, but a civilized debate of opposing views is a good thing. As a former editorial writer for my hometown paper, you would probably agree.

But I take personal offense to your recent blog post (“Register ad pushes socialized medicine” – a provocative, if not very accurate title).

Why would you start by questioning my story, ailment and treatment?

...with this sketchy story, we’re left to assume that she’s been prescribed the right treatment for her ailments, and that no other, cheaper — and possibly better — treatments are available to help her.

I’ve had this ailment for 20 years. I’ve seen four doctors, including a world-recognized expert who helped pioneer an effective treatment for my condition. My 18 page statement from my local pharmacy shows I’ve spent $37,347.47 over the past 10 years. I’ve done my own research on this disease, through medical journals, support groups and the Internet. I’m a registered nurse with over 17 years experience.

Don’t you think that if there was a “cheaper and possibly better treatment” I would be utilizing it? If there was a cheaper option, don’t you think I would have used it before I mortgaged my house? Before I put my wedding ring up for sale?

My insurance company used to cover one of the drugs I need with a $25 co-pay. It’s now a $250.31 co-pay. I saw a jump of 625% over a three-month period. There are other examples of how I’m being short-changed on my insurance coverage, but I won’t bore you with more details here.

I just want the care that I’ve paid for–why should I be attacked for that?

Respectfully,

Jan from Anaheim
